Mathematics is a core subject in the National Curriculum, and we at Oakdale Junior School, use the objectives from the National Curriculum 2014 Programmes of Study and Abacus scheme as the basis for implementing the statutory requirements for mathematics.
‘Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary in most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.’
Mathematics Programme of Study, Department of Education 2014
At Oakdale Junior School we are committed to ensuring that every child has the mathematical knowledge and understanding needed to enable them to make excellent progress and leave us with secure mathematical life skills.
We are currently focussing on known facts within mental Maths to ensure that all children have a rapid recall of key facts so that they can then apply them across the Maths curriculum.
The children will be working to be awarded Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum certificates for their ability to know, use and apply known facts.
In order to learn known facts, children will need a range of oral and practical experiences.
